Gulia Groenke: Inflamed Spirits

October 07 - October 28,2023

From Redbud Arts Center:

"We are excited to present Gulia Groenke's "Inflamed Spirits", an exhibition at Redbud Arts Center East on Saturday, October 7, from 6pm-9pm.

Gulia Groenke was born in a place that influenced her to expose the devastating Human Imprint on the natural world in her paintings. Norilsk, a city located in the world’s northernmost area, is about 200 miles above the arctic circle and pronounced as one of the most polluted places on Earth.

The city’s vocation? The mining of metals. Nickel, cobalt, and copper are highly sought after metals to produce electric car batteries. The result of unearthing these precious metals bear witness to a barren landscape of dead and dying trees and the contamination of glacial rivers.

This ecocide, the destruction of large areas of the natural environment because of human activity, influenced Gulia to visually express and bring attention to – a cataclysmic destruction of our environment that affects us all. Her work extends beyond the devastating effects of Human Imprint experienced in her birthplace addressing environmental issues far and wide.

Groenke's works expose in form and color, inconspicuous through abstraction, the human impact on the global environment. Her work transpires quiet contemplation about the effects on our planet. Her paintings are filled with solemn depictions tugging at our core without judgement to bring about reflection and awareness.

Gulia Groenke’s first solo exhibition shows the interconnectedness between nature and humanity revealing a mutual codependency."
