"Kyle Hawley, Founder and Creative Director of Letterpress PLAY, is breaking the silence surrounding motherhood with her powerful exhibition, "Unfolding the Rainbow of Motherhood," created in collaboration with Flatbed Press. Using the unique medium of mono-printing, Hawley transforms cloth utility accessories and garments that she designed for mothering into seven life-sized prints that are embedded with colors that recall the nostalgic colors of Kodichrome. These prints, each a contemporary masterpiece, unravel the complex emotions that encompass motherhood, from boundless joy to profound grief, whimsy to purpose. Hawley's prints serve as a testament to the tools of motherhood, reflecting her personal journey and evolution as a mother.

She is the Founder and Creative Director of Letterpress PLAY, a renowned letterpress studio and store located in Austin, Texas.. With a background in film, theatre, and art, Kyle brings a unique perspective and creative flair to her practice as an artist and printmaker. Hawley writes: “I did not know about Motherhood. My own mother was reluctant while my grandmothers expressed a boundless love for their role. Motherhood is an idea that unfolds and requires that each individual bring their full self to the job. It is a colorful rainbow of emotions. It is an expansive life-long lesson. The job of Motherhood demands the employment of both time-honored and reimagined tools. Motherhood is a job of reinvention. It is the reinvention of both tools and self. These images are pressed from my indispensable set of tools. I employ them to bring my best self to the job and identity of Motherhood. They have been folded and unfolded many times and across many places to provide comfort, play, and practical use. Motherhood is my great gift. It is an honor and a challenge. I too have been washed in color, pressed, folded, unfolded, and reimagined in the pursuit of Motherhood.
