Guadalupe Hernandez: El Corazon, Scenes and Memories from Mexico

January 14 - April 15,2024

From the Beeville Art Museum:

"Guadalupe Hernandez brings El Corazon, Scenes and Memories from Mexico to the Beeville Art Museum January 14 – April 15, 2023. The exhibit will feature a collection of paintings and cut paper pieces where Hernandez explores the Mexican diaspora through the lens of people, places, and memories from his childhood in Mexico. An artist’s reception, free to the public, is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, from noon to 2:00 p.m.

El Corazon, Scenes and Memories from Mexico features pieces that are autobiographical in nature. “My parents were laborers who instilled a strong work ethic and deep religious faith in my four brothers and me. These lessons have significantly influenced my work and been integral to my artistic process,” commented Hernandez. “Working with meticulous care in my paintings while applying expressive marks, desaturated colors, and an array of paint applications to express reverence and pride for my subject.” Visitors will encounter Hernandez’s cut paper pieces feature precise technique requiring thousands of cuts using a combination of blades, woodworking chisels and leather punches producing Papel Picado-inspired works. His paintings depict detailed portraits and scenes celebrating Mexican culture, beauty, and customs.

Guadalupe Hernandez was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico but moved to the United States at an early age. Although he grew up in the United States, he maintained a deep connection to his Mexican heritage through familial traditions. His works explore the Mexican diaspora through the lens of people, places, and memories from his childhood in Mexico. Hernandez earned his Bachelor of Fine Art in 2016 and Master of Fine Art in 2021 from Houston Baptist University. Most recently, Hernandez participated as a Changaritto artist in residence with the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, TX which culminated in the acquisition of two works into their permanent collection.

“I know the deep traditions that Guadalupe expresses in both technique and subject matter will resonate with our visitors,” noted Executive Director Tracy Saucier. “His ability to pay homage to his cultural history combined with his precise technique make this exhibit a feast for both the eye and the soul.”
