From Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking:
"Flatbed is excited to announce the upcoming solo exhibition for Annalise Gratovich. Gratovich will be exhibiting her color woodcut series “Carrying Things from Home" published by Flatbed Press along with new collages and woodcuts.
The series, “Carrying Things from Home” consists of seven life-sized color woodcuts that explore themes of displacement, self and cultural identity, intention and accountability, as well as burden and regret. Each figure in the series is a totemic being who serves an individual purpose: The Mariner, The Hunter, The Builder, The Musician, The Mother, The Undertaker, and The Healer. The figures are based on matryoshka dolls (Russian stacking dolls) and the textile patterns are derived from Ukrainian embroidery, either in patterning or stylistic outline. Attached are four images of the seven woodcuts that can be used for publication purposes only.
Gratovich states: “This nod to the traditional and folk arts of the lands of my heritage, Ukraine and Texas, is used to evoke feelings of nostalgia and memories or fantasies of faraway places which are lost or cannot be returned to. Of all the woodcuts published so far, The Musician is the most derivative of my family history. My father and his parents left Ukraine during WWII, taking only what they could carry. My grandfather would play accordion to Allied forces and asked to get paid in Lucky Strike cigarettes which he would trade for food, clothing, and shelter. I grew up hearing small snippets of this story, one of the only stories of this time my family still has, and eventually, it made its way into my work.” Annalise Gratovich, 2017
