Mark Greenwalt: I Spot Eye Spots

January 20 - February 16,2024

From Hooks-Epstein Galleries:

"Distinguished for his drawings of surreal, nondeterministic figures, artist Mark Greenwalt creates humanoid forms of sculptural volume that defy the canons of proportion, challenge the underlying historic ideals of beauty, and question societal notions about depictions of monstrousness. In his most recent body of work, I Spot Eye SpotsGreenwalt draws on surfaces charged with evolutionary potential, where his anomalous figures emerge as pictorial constructs that are free from contextual constraints. These drawings serve as objects of meditation about the nature of suffering and the enduring human spirit.

Mark Greenwalt earned his MA from Stephen F. Austin University in 1986 (Nacogdoches, TX) and MFA from The Pratt Institute in 1990 (Brooklyn, NY). Greenwalt has been a tenured professor with The College of the Mainland (Texas City, TX), since 2005 and an Instructor at the Museum of Fine Art Houston’s Glassell School of Art (TX) since 2019. He previously taught at the University of Houston and Rice University (Houston) from 1993-2000. Greenwalt’s work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions, primarily throughout Texas. In 2021, he had a solo exhibition at South Texas College in McAllen, TX. In 2022, his work was featured in group shows at Lamar University (Beaumont, TX) and The Glassell School of Art. Greenwalt’s work was also featured in Galveston Art Center’s 2018 group show, Visual Pathology (TX)."
