Andy Warhol: Cowboys and Indians

March 01 - March 04,2024

From the Museum of the Big Bend: "The Museum of the Big Bend is proud to announce the exhibit of Andy Warhol’s renowned “Cowboys and Indians” portfolio with an opening reception Friday, March 1, from 5-7 p.m. This captivating portfolio is a remarkable exploration of Warhol’s fascination with American cultural icons, featuring 14 prints that blend historical figures with mass media interpretations of the American West. Released in 1986, “Cowboys and Indians” stands as one of Warhol’s last major series before his passing in 1987. The portfolio offers a unique perspective where history intersects with contemporary media. From cowboys to Native Americans, Warhol’s work captures the fantasy of the West in his signature pop art style. In addition to Warhol’s work, the museum will feature its permanent collections from Edward S. Curtis and Louis Siegriest. Curtis’s 1900s photogravures of Native Americans and Siegriest’s 1939 Indian Court Series screen prints will provide historical context and enrich the viewer’s experience of Warhol’s interpretation. The Museum of the Big Bend is honored to host this exceptional exhibit, which was organized by the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio. The opening reception will include light refreshments and live music by Ross Cashiola and the Grand Tourists. Admission is free for museum members, while non-members can attend for $20 per person. Tickets can be purchased in advance online, at the Marilyn Ann Caldwell Welcome Center or the gift shop, or at the door. The exhibit runs through June 1."
