Legacy: Jerry Manson and Brooke Burnside

January 25 - February 22,2025

From Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking: "Join Flatbed in celebrating the legacy of Jerry Manson, who served as Flatbed’s Master Printer of editioning from 1990 - 2002 and Master Printer Emeritus from 2002 until 2019 and Brooke Burnside, Flatbed Jerry Manson Resident for 2024. Manson was a proponent of lifelong learning. He founded the Third Coast Press in Austin in the early 1980s after studying printmaking with Ken Hale, Lee Chesney and Tim High at the University of Texas. In 1990 he became a partner with Katherine Brimberry and Mark L. Smith at Flatbed Press and editioned most of the prints published by Flatbed in the 1990s. His own practice as a printmaker included works created with both lithography and etching. His high degree of craftsmanship with the editioning process is a legacy that he established for the quality of work created at Flatbed. In 2020, Flatbed established the Jerry Manson Printmaking Residency to give local artists intensive access to our printmaking studio along with technical and financial support. Brooke Burnside was awarded the residency in 2024. Burnside was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. She earned her BA in Film from Vassar College and her MA in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University. In 2019, she graduated from the Masters of Architecture program at the University of Texas at Austin and has since worked as an architectural designer in Austin, TX. Burnside has shown her artwork in Nassau, Bahamas, at MASS Gallery, Ivester Contemporary, and other galleries in Austin, as well as at the Spring Break Art show in New York City. She was a recipient of the 2020 Big Medium LINE residency and also participated in the 2020 Willow House residency for Black Artists in Terlingua, TX. During the residency at Flatbed, Burnside focused on creating unique works using collage, monotyping and relief printmaking methods. She states: During my residency, named in honor of Jerry Manson, a master printer dear to Flatbed Studio and Austin’s printmaking world, I was granted a rare opportunity to fully immerse myself in my creative pursuits. With access to a robust collection of printmaking equipment and the thorough knowledge of the studio team, I was pushed to dive deeper into the craft and discover new facets of my work. My art frequently features imagery of Black womanhood, typically rendered beside colorful and abstract scenes. During this residency, I continued using linocut printmaking but also began to experiment with stencil monotyping, a new process for me. This shift allowed me to incorporate more literal elements, intertwining vibrant fruit with my depictions of braids. In this work I am continuing to explore themes of womanhood and its connection to providing, fertility, and perishability. This blend of known techniques with new processes introduced a fresh variable into my artistic practice. I have immense respect for the tradition of printmaking. This body of work represents the culmination of three months of intensive learning—often through trial and error—within this rich and vast world. I am excited to share it. Showing alongside Burnside are works by Jerry Manson from his estate. His often playful lithographs and etchings range in subject matter from scenes from the “Three Penny Opera” to colorful explorations of color abstraction. His work shows a high degree of experimentation with printmaking processes which is one of the objectives that is encouraged with the Jerry Manson Residency. A public reception will be held to honor both Burnside and Manson on Saturday, January 25 from 4 until 6 pm. Attached images can be used for promotional purposes only.
