From the artist: "Traversing Boundaries is the culmination of UTD lecturer Colette Copeland’s Fulbright Scholar research in India writing about interdisciplinary female artists exploring socially- engaged themes and practices. Transgressing the institutions of colonialism and patriarchy, while living in a rape and femicide culture, these artists use a variety of media to critically and subversively examine pressing issues including gender violence, caste oppression, inequity of labor, environmental crises including the scarcity of clean water, and Partition– through the framework of personal history and memory. Each of the 12 artists tells a unique story through the lens of their lived experiences. The artists’ works consider the notions of borders and boundaries (physical, emotional, real, imagined, geographic, virtual, convergent, divergent and/or transformative) that Indian women face today both internally and externally. The exhibition provides a small glance into the rich and vibrant work that speaks out against human injustices, challenging societal traditions and providing much-needed awareness and dialogue towards positive change for the future."
